Artist’s books are handmade books in which words, images, and the structure of the piece all contribute to its meaning and the experience of exploration. Definitions abound. Book artist and writer Johanna Drucker considers an artist’s book as a “zone of activity.” And, indeed, “readers” need to explore an artist’s book to figure out what is going on—these are not conventional books!—discover what might not be evident, and consider what the book is conveying. — I have turned to artists’ books as a way of exploring different worlds and different experiences via words, images, and materials that come together to challenge people’s understandings and expectations. A selection of work can be viewed below and on linked pages, though these are much more interesting to explore as you wish in three-dimensions.
