Eco-Logic — I tend to favor representation in much of my drawing but in my artist’s books I have been trying more abstract, gestural work. On this occasion I wanted to focus on mark-making with an emphasis on patterns. I started out with a number of folded sheets of soft, handmade paper that absorbed watercolor paints quickly and bled if the paper was damp. I combined wet and dry brush work on different pages and used varied color combinations from sheet to sheet. I painted a number of pages while visiting Lake George in October, with a direct view of the water. Like it or not a landscape of colors and marks co-evolved inspired by the autumn view out the window.

I did not originally conceive of these separate sheets of paper as a book but then realized I could sew them on the mountain folds of a tiny accordion-pleated spine and create an object that suggests shifting landscapes as the reader plays with sets of pages and the flexible book structure.
